Ace of Ads

I simply can’t resist this. Lemmy singing Ace of Spades with a fantastic twist. Well done to the client for going with it, a beautifully paced ad from BBH. I love it!

Never work with…

…Animals and er… clients. Our lovely pet food client recently got into the Virgin sponsored Sunday Times Fast Track Top 100 (largely down to our fabulous and irresistible packaging work), and needed a shot of the directors. We decided to push the envelope and included a few of their biggest fans (and yes, they did get paid in pet food).

We started with the guys and one cat, locked off the camera and brought the others in one by one, ending up with the distinguished group you see here.

Masterful organisation and photography by the talented (and supremely patient) Alex Wright at Ten Eight Photography, art direction and animal wrangling by yours truly (only one accident – luckily courtesy of the West Highland Terrier, not the 11 stone Harlequin Great Dane) and a lovely touch on the comp job by Ian on the iMac.

From The Desk Of…

… Steve Whitehouse – I have always loved Punk Rock. In 1977 the Sex Pistols typified the anti-establishment. But just look where we are now… Pretty Vacant features in an ad for William Hill and Johnny Rotten takes centre stage in the ads for Country Life Butter.

I think it is fantastic! But whatever next? Jimmy Pursey advertising on-line Bingo? Rat Scabies starring in an ad for toothpaste? Iggy Pop selling Car Insurance..?

Never mind the ads, here’s the cash!

Yes, this is yours truly talking knowledgeably about photography. I wonder why I didn’t get asked back?

We’re twenty!

Well, we made it to 20! In October 1990 Steve and I jumped off the top of the Saatchi building into the shark infested start-up waters. We’ve been nibbled a few times but are still here to tell the tale, design the Ads and sell the T shirts. Two decades that have seen a seismic shift in the way agencies work – with the domination of the Mac, the demise of the repro industry (and the agency lunch) and the large scale de-mystification of the Advertising Industry in general.

About the only thing the client can’t do yet is the creative (!), though I believe Adobe are working on the software…

Computer Sex

Oh Yes. A brand new iMac 27 inch arrived on my desk yesterday. Now I’m definitely not a computer geek, but this is a GORGEOUS piece of kit. Apple designers are as brilliant as their new 16:9 widescreen display with 2560×1440 resolution. Now I just need to update every single bit of software we have plus all the peripherals…

Muse, Old Trafford

A recent convert to the runaway train that is Muse, I was blown away by the recent gig (almost literally, with a zillion watt sound system). Special mention for the visual show.

Brilliant.

Hello world!

Well. Does the world have room for MORE comment..? I think there’s some space left for erudite and insightful posts, on a range of design topics (if only I knew anyone who had them)…
